The Vale of Glamorgan is criss-crossed by a network of
rural footpathslinking its towns and villages with the Heritage Coast and countryside. The great majority of these
paths are now clear and available for enjoyable trouble-free
walking. Conveniently, whole area is covered by the 1:25,000
scale OS Explorer map 151 (Cardiff and Bridgend) which
is strongly recommended.

Generally the terrain is easy and although
there are steep ascents in many places they are never
very long. The paths pass through enclosed farm land,
arable and grazing, scattered woodland, some small areas
of common land and along country lanes, green tracks
and coastal paths. A few sections particularly along
cliff tops need particular care. Stiles are frequent
along most paths and in some locations paths may be flooded
or very muddy after prolonged heavy rainfall.
"The new Countryside and Rights of Way Act comes into effect in Wales from May 2005. The well publicised (but sometimes misunderstood) "freedom to roam" provisions are of little relevance to walking in the Vale since they only apply to land that is predominantly moor, mountain, heath or down. It also includes all registered common land. The great majority of the Vale countryside is enclosed land where walking routes follow waymarked public rights of way. Most of the land over which you will be walking is the workplace and home of the local farming community. Enjoy walking in the Vale and please follow the Countryside Code, the key points being – |
|
- Be safe – plan ahead and follow signs
- Leave gates and property as you find them
- Protect plants and animals and take your litter home
- Keep dogs under close control
- Consider other people

| The Millennium Heritage
Trail is a continuous
long distance trail which meanders for more than 65 miles
through a complete cross section of the Vale’s attractive
and varied landscape and linking its towns and villages
with the Heritage Coast and Countryside. It can be broken
into any number of linear sections. |
| Circular Walks You can explore dozens of
carefully chosen 2-20 mile routes in all parts of the Vale.
There is something here for to suit a wide range of interests,
walking speeds and stamina levels. Many of these overlap
the Millennium Heritage Trail. |
